Happy Birthday Charles Dickens!

Happy Birthday Charles Dickens
Today marks Rochester’s most famous novelists Charles Dickens 200th Birthday!
Rochester, Kent played a large part in Charles Dickens life and many of his novels feature places and landmarks from this quaint little town. The recent BBC rendition of Edwin Drude, Charles Dickens final novel, was filmed in Rochester and featured the Cathedral on many occasions.
Most of the restaurants and shops in Rochester play homage to this World famous novelist by using names and quotations in the name chosen for their business, ‘Sweet Expectations’ ‘Pips Of Rochester’ ‘Oliver’s Wine Bar’ to name a few.
Charles Dickens wrote the likes of Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Little Dorrit, Great Expectations, The Mystery Of Edwin Drude he liked to write in weekly chapters, some like to refer to him as the modern day soap writer. He kept people intrigued and wanting more, a good talent to have when you’re a novelist in the 1800’s. It’s probably this same talent that’s kept him as much alive today as he was back then, as a fascinating and loveable character.
Charles Dickens sadly died in his home Gads Hill Place aged just 58 years old, he was found unconscious in the kitchen of Gads Hill and was pronounced dead at the scene. He wanted nothing more than to be buried in Rochester Cathedral in an inexpensive ceremony but his wishes were never met, he was laid to rest in the Poets corner of Westminster Abby.
